There was a lot of love in this book for language. Almost all of the characters were scholars devoted to language study, and the magic system was based on translation. Translating, and the power it creates, allowed them to accomplish fascinating things. This text contained a lot of information about the language and its history, and I devoured it. It was also incredibly immersive in terms of story and writing.

There was a feeling that I was wandering around the campus and halls alongside the characters in this version of Oxford as if I were there myself. Kuang also captures the feelings of the academic journey better than any other writer I have ever read.

A progression of characters gave life to the excitement of being chosen as one of a handful of experts in your field, the intensity of bonding with the people around you, and the inevitable disillusionment when the shine wears off and the workload becomes unmanageable, along with the surprising feeling of loss after accomplishing your goal. Although our differences were many, I was surprised at how much I related to these characters.

Speaking of the characters, I adored them. As the book’s first half explores the characters’ characterizations and the building of their relationships, the tragedies in the second half are all the more bitter and gut-wrenching. Robin’s journey in this book was quite astounding. It was a truly incredible achievement for a man who came from nothing, literally on the edge of death.

There was such a difference between the boy at the beginning and the man at the end of the story. Similarly to Robin, the entire cohort of Robin’s teammates and the supporting cast felt three-dimensional. There were so many topics and themes explored through these characters, especially regarding group dynamics and the cohesiveness of individuals with diverse backgrounds and varying degrees of privilege.

This book explored so many interesting themes that I could write an entire book about them. As well as the tokenism that goes along with classism, sexism, and racism within academia, it addressed their inherent characteristics. In addition, it emphasized the destructive nature of colonialism and capitalism, and posed a timely and important question: can oppressive systems be changed from within or must they be destroyed altogether before meaningful change can take place? This led to another interesting ethical quandary. Is violence justified when the cause is just?

Additionally, the characters provided a fascinating glimpse into the allure of proxy privilege and how it can maintain the status quo by controlling the oppressed. As history has shown, it is likely someone is being exploited somewhere in order to achieve the resources necessary to maintain it. This book was truly a masterpiece.
