City of Girls The Sunday Times PDF Summary:

A glamorous, sexy, compelling romp of a novel about showgirls in New York in the 1940s. She conveyed the growth of a person through her writing. It’s about growing up, learning, living through passion, friendships, love, war, bitterness, confusion, self-doubt, strength & everything else that life offers.

It is a story of a New Yorker who is a city-comber in her youth. She goes over the city squandering her youth and body too. She starts as a Broadway watcher with its showgirls and all and ends up as a full-time seamstress and part-time hooker.

It’s about the growth of an immature lost girl through the city and the people around. How she identifies and sinks in the education that comes from those more experienced than her. Its beautifully articulates the journey of self-discovery, through friendships, through experiences. It tells how certain things take time, and some just happen.

This is a welcome departure from her style of writing that permeated Eat Pray Love. The setting and the language fascinate you. It is a truly human book of stumbles and falls.

Absolutely love the protagonist. She knows what she wants in her life, although this wisdom is not gained easily. She has her share of troubles and losses in her life. It was fantastic to see New York city from her eyes, both pre and post-world war second.

The story starts slow however picks up and so does your interest. It will be hard to keep it down. It does not have a typical happy ending but leaves a smile on your face. Happy reading!
