The author of this book, Greg McKeown, aims to reduce the feeling of burnout by focusing on working more efficiently, rather than overcomplicating our lives and constantly working harder with minimal results. There are 16 chapters in the book organized into three sections: Effortless State, Effortless Action, and Effortless Results.

In this book, McKeown uses many analogies and diagrams to discuss how to change your mindset, identify more simple solutions to problems, and choose the easier path that leaves you with more time for the important things in your life, and more time to do what really matters to you. Even though some of the analogies appeared a bit off (televisions and computers aren’t exactly the same), I still understood what Mckeown was saying.

Each section ends with a nicely summarized list of actions to take, so if you’re looking for a concise list of what to do, you could start there. On page 90, for example, the main ideas of the first five chapters are listed, and you can get an idea of what the entire section is about in just two pages. My review of the entire book has made me realize that I could have saved some time by using these summary pages to guide my reading and only reading the chapters that I felt needed more explanation.

The authors of this genre rarely produce one book that is so life-changing (Essentialism) and then a second book that is totally different and also completely transformative. But Greg McKeown has done it again. This book is everything. Taking a breath you’ve been holding for years has become that one long exhales. This is an incredible book for all ages. The book provides you with very practical tools for starting to implement the things that matter in your everyday life if you really want to focus on the things that matter.

There is a feeling of effortlessness that many of us have experienced when we are physically restful, emotionally unburdened, and mentally energized. As you are reading this, you are aware, alert, present, attentive, and focused on what matters to you at that moment. Focusing on the most important things comes naturally to you.

This is an easy read about how to achieve the most important things in life without having to make unnecessary sacrifices that society believes are required for success. Everyone will be able to identify with the examples and work towards attaining an effortless state after reading this book. There was a particular laugh for me when it came to Swedish death cleaning. In order to make the passing of my parents effortless for my siblings and me, I wish they had done that. Using the principle, we are preparing for our eventual passing and our senior years in an effortless manner for us and our children.
