Girl in White Cotton PDF Summary

Avni Doshi’s debut novel ‘Girl in white Cotton’ Avni explores a weird, sarcastically mother-daughter relationship wherein the daughter finds pleasure in the pain and sufferings of her mother after seeing her responsible for her traumatic childhood played with a series of unpleasant events that haunt her every day.

The story is mostly a sadistic tale with Tara the mom getting married to an NRI employed in Pune city. The marriage seemed more a formality and not much of an interesting story; it a very typically forced to stay and share the same bed until Tara escapes to join an ashram (almost an endured bigger) with the least attention to Antara.

Antara named a sarcastic blindfold to her mother’s ignorance as is the protagonist- the daughter. Antara (Un-tara) seems to be the beginning of the weird relationship between the mother-daughter since childhood, an untraditional mother who is constantly competing for her own daughter, and a daughter who doesn’t give a deaf ear.

But Tara gradually as she’s growing old suffers a memory leak, she is gradually learning on forgetting – often the daily chores, keeping the gas on an entire night, and not for excitement forgets her own daughter Antara but she’s too reliant on accepting this.

Antara on the other side is least interested in caring for an unknown woman (her mother) who never looked after her until upon growing up, a significant person who had buried her childhood. The novel will leave you unsettled as Avni explores the journey of Antara- shifting and balancing memories and pain, an unusual familial relation, and many shaking.
