Love and Other Words PDF
This is an excellent contemporary romance novel. Both Macy and Elliot’s stories, past and present, were wonderful. The book has fast pacing, with a surprise reveal at the end, which makes you want to keep reading to learn what happened to these characters in the past. The amount of smut was just right for my preference as well.
Those teenage puppy love aspects, heartbreak, and second chances were all part of it! There were a few chapters that broke my heart, but they were so good! This book touched my heart to the core. You root for the main characters throughout the story and there are lots of ups and downs. Suitable for any romance fan who enjoys cheesy, sweet romances.
An alternating timeline between then and now is used in Love and Other Words. The romance between Macy and Elliot follows the second chance trope and friends to lovers. Over the years, they have grown up together, growing their friendship to something more over summer vacations and holidays. A terrible mistake has separated Macy and Elliott for eleven years, but Elliott is eager to rekindle their love and friendship. There is a “will they/won’t they” element to Love and Other Words.
What happens when your first love returns after a decade apart if you can’t forget them? A careful life has been constructed for Macy. No risk of heartbreak with a solid job, a safe relationship, and a few friends. The loss of her mother at a young age has left her with no room for loss in her life. In response to Elliot’s collision with this safe life, Macy spirals. The two tweens who lived next door to each other were once each other’s first everything as gangly tweens.
In the wake of a huge mistake, the two lose touch, until a chance reunion forces them to confront old truths, old feelings, and secrets never discussed. The love story of Macy and Elliot alternates between “then” (the teen years) and now. It’s hard to say anything bad about the book when you’ve read anything by Christina Lauren, and “Love & Other Words” doesn’t disappoint either. While I had some difficulty with some scenes (mainly in the “then” timeline), this book was very enjoyable.
I had a hard time putting it down, even though it wasn’t my favorite read by them. You should never judge a book by its cover, but don’t you think this one is gorgeous? Wow, this book gave me all the feels! It helps readers understand what characters went through and how their future is shaped when writers use a then-and-now timeline. In this one, I think the flashbacks were the most impactful.
The connection between Macy and Elliot was instantaneous, and I loved watching them grow up together as they dealt with grief, jealousy, and sex. Interestingly, I was surprised at how many intimate topics they discussed, adding to the tension and angst. Elliot’s determination to get Macy back when they reunited really touched me. Even though the love triangle was handled well, I found it hard to see Macy with her fiance.
Having no idea how things ended between them when they were young, I was certainly unprepared for the details. You’ll want your Kleenex box on hand because it was very emotional. It would have been nice if they had discussed the past sooner, but I suppose it was more dramatic due to how it was resolved at the end. The ending was enjoyable, even though things were wrapped up quickly. There is no doubt that this is one of my favorite Christina Lauren pieces.
