Magnolia Flower PDF Book Summary

Ibram X. Kendi, the bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist and Antiracist Baby, brings this iconic tale to life through an adaptation by the National Book Award winner and bestselling author of How to Be an Antiracist. In Magnolia Flower, Loveis Wise (The People Remember, Ablaze with Color) beautifully illustrates the story of an Afro-Indigenous girl who longs for freedom.

The daughter of slaves who fled slavery and the Trail of Tears, Magnolia Flower has a vibrant spirit. Her desire to connect with others, too, who long for freedom is not deterred by the rigid ways of the world. Her father disapproves of a young writer who she finds to have this quality. When Magnolia must choose and set off on a journey to find freedom, she must prove it is possible to lead with one’s heart when he or she makes a choice.

Several American classics have been attributed to Zora Neale Hurston, including this stirring folktale rich with poetic prose, culture, and history. The short story was published in 1925 in The Spokesman and later in her collection Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick in 2020.

Magnolia Flower is a story of a transformative and radical devotion between generations of Indigenous and Black people in America, tenderly retold by #1 New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award recipient Ibram X. Kendi. A picture book that reminds us that love can never be stopped by any force. It is beautifully illustrated by Loveis Wise.
