About the book
This memoir is not about creating a perfect, cookie-cutter story. The point is that the experiences and the feelings that we have can shape us in different ways at different points in our journey. The fragmentation and nonlinear timeline is frustrating, yes, but the point is not when it happened, but the effect it has on Elliot and his internal journey. This book is extremely visceral. Almost every scene evokes some sort of strong emotion. Ultimately, I feel like Elliot wrote this memoir for himself and for the LGBTQ+ community. He says “Stepping up is not just for the individual, and I am able to be out because of countless other people, ones who did not have access to what I have, who won’t end up on magazine covers.” It is one picture of one person’s journey to find self. It is a discussion of relationships of all sorts. I’m glad to know more about Elliot, his personal journey, and the discussion of sex and gender.
