The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida PDF Book Summary

1990, Colombo. Maali Almeida, a war photographer, gambler, and closet queen, has died in what appears to be a celestial immigration office. His mutilated body is sinking in Beira Lake, and he has no idea who murdered him. In a country where death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons settle scores, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts who swarm around can confirm. But even in the afterlife, Maali’s time is running out. He has seven moons to reach out to the guy and woman he loves the most and leads them to the images that will rock Sri Lanka.

Shehan Karunatilaka returns with a “thrilling satire” (Economist) and rip-roaring state-of-the-nation epic that provides equal parts mordant humor and troubling, profound truths, ten years after his prize-winning novel Chinaman established him as one of Sri Lanka’s best novelists.

This is a much more complicated and serious topic. The author’s approach keeps the wit and frequently hilarious language of his previous book while also confronting the atrocities and pain that the country was through during the 1990s conflict years. His great devotion and care for Sri Lanka, as well as his outrage at what happened during the war, appear on every page, while our newspapers report on the country’s current challenges. You come away from this book deeply concerned about the possibility of history repeating itself.

The obvious literary parallels are Salman Rushdie’s and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s magical realism. But the novel also harkens back to Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls or Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. Karunatilaka has rendered creative justice to a calamitous moment in his country’s history. This book is tough to classify. It is part supernatural, including ghosts and spirits in the afterlife. However, it also provides you with a thorough understanding of Sri Lankan politics. As the story progresses, it becomes a whodunit. The end result is an exciting read.

There are not many novels that simultaneously bring to mind Agatha Christie, Salman Rushdie, Raymond Chandler, John le CarrĂ©, and Stranger Things – but this one does. Karunatilaka respects the conventions of all the genres he so extravagantly stacks. The result is an unexpectedly exciting book.
