The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read Book PDF Summary

There is no doubt in my mind that every person has been or will be at least one of these things: a parent, a child, a grandparent, a grandchild, an uncle, an aunt, a niece, or a nephew. Many of us inhabit more than one of those roles, and they can define us, shape us, and, not surprisingly, dominate our self-understanding in both positive and negative ways. Several types of parenting advice are available to parents regarding subjects such as children’s sleeping habits and discipline, and they range from excellent to terrible in quality.

Most of these parenting books frame matters in terms of training: sleep training, potty training, discipline training, etc. Even though the training mindset may be useful for particular subjects a child needs to learn, it does not address parenting as a whole. The book Philippa Perry wrote “The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read” is a refreshing and worthwhile alternative to the usual book you read with your parents.

Psychotherapist Perry, whose book admits her own parenting faults with refreshing honesty and transparency, makes a powerful argument that “we should not see our babies, children, and teenagers as chores to feed, clean, and fix, but rather as people we will have lifelong relationships with from the beginning.”.

The book is a valuable resource not only for parents, but also for grandparents, aunts and uncles, and even adult children. Throughout the book, she emphasizes the importance of considering the underlying relationship as the source of many complaints and conflicts between adults and children. I find it hard to look at a newborn and imagine how quickly that diapered bundle of cries will grow into an adult.

As adults surrounding this child deliberately consider their relationships with the child (especially when conflict arises, but also when laying the groundwork to avoid conflict), the better their chances of a healthy relationship between them. Even a childless orphan of advanced years could find value in this book unless perhaps that individual is cloistered away from all human contact.

However, everyone else can gain at least some insight into relationships between generations, whether it be for understanding present-day relationships or understanding historic ones. It is important to remember that, as imperfect people, parents (and other adults) do not have to strive to perfect their children. They are creating a person to love, not a work of art. Despite the book’s over-the-top title, its advice is extremely sound.
