The Dragon’s Promise’s pace was good and well done! The POV is still only from Shiori’anma. There were a number of new and “grey” characters introduced in the book, but each of them was intended to shape Shiori and the story’s development. The conflicts were a lot, if not abundant, to digest. The plot twists were always there to keep Shiori and Takkan from achieving their HEA, whether it was a hopeless suitor, a lost pearl, people who wanted Shiori sacrificed, demons, dragons, ghosts, or anything else.

Almost every chapter left me in a state of dilemma, frustration, and grief that made me want to hug and cry. New characters complicated things at each turn – Shiori’s loved Takkan is always at the back of her mind, friend or foe! The Spin the Dawn duology is mentioned, but readers are not required to read it before diving into this series.

Shiori grew up a lot in this book. As she evolved, grew, and accepted her role in Kiata’s betterment, she stepped up on empathy, duty, and acceptance. Despite her efforts, Shiori is far from perfect, and Kiki often chastises her for her shortcomings. As Shiori, the young, impulsive, and “carefree” princess of Kiata, learns about responsibility, humility, and destiny within herself, as well as her royal duties – consequences and love – in Book 1, she learns about responsibility, humility, and destiny within herself.

Her magical side and its connection to Kiata are further explored in this book. Princesses aren’t the only ones who discover their true identities. In other words, she embraces her fate while still believing in what she believes. Although she was faced with fierce temptations and times of giving up, she matured into a brave and honorable princess. It was her decision to maneuver the future in a way that made sense for everyone – sacrificing everything for peace within her country, keeping her word, and being as selfless as possible.

Overall, The Dragon’s Promise is an enchanting, fantastic read! There is so much world-building that I believe Kiata, Ai’Long, Tambu, etc., may be visible on a world map with the care and detail included! The story is written and developed very well. This is a bittersweet farewell to all the characters, from Emperor Hanriyu to temple keeper Oshri, the main character. Readers will be captivated by these beautiful people.
