The Fall of Numenor PDF

In this book, J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings on the Second Age of Middle-earth have been brought together for the first time in their entirety, with brand-new watercolor and pencil illustrations by Alan Lee. Middle-earth’s Second Age has been described as a “dark age” by J.R.R. Tolkien, who also said that it does not require much explanation. Readers would have to settle for tantalizing glimpses of it including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of Barad-dûr, and Sauron’s rise within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices for many years.

Christopher Tolkien did not publish The Silmarillion until after his father’s death when a fully developed story could be told. It was at its close, despite the book’s main focus on the First Age of Middle-earth, that two key works revealed the tumultuous events relating to the rise and fall of the island of Númenor. After the angelic Valar and the Elves defeated and captured the Dark Lord Morgoth, the kingdom was raised from the Great Sea and gifted to the Men of Middle-earth. The Kingdom became a seat of influence and wealth. However, as their power increased, the seed of their demise was inevitably sown, leading to the Last Alliance of Men and Elves.

As a result of his subsequent publications, even greater insight into the Second Age emerged. His father’s stories, many in draft form, were presented and discussed in Christopher Tolkien’s magisterial twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, where he presented and discussed a wealth of further tales written by his father.

A new chronicle of Middle-earth’s Second Age has been assembled into one comprehensive volume by editor Brian Sibley, following the timeline of “The Tale of Years” in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Features new watercolor and pencil illustrations by Alan Lee, the doyen of Tolkien’s art, and told substantially in Tolkien’s words from the various published texts.
