The Last Chairlift PDF Book Summary

With his first book in seven years, one of the greatest novelists in history brings readers a ghost story and a love story that spans eight decades of sexual politics. The World According to Garp, The Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, and A Widow for One Year is just a few of John Irving’s critically praised works.

Now that Irving has completed what he deems his final major novel—there will only be shorter ones in the future, TIME magazine labels his work “epic and remarkable, contentious, and sexually bold.”In 1941, Rachel Brewster competes in the National Downhill and Slalom Championships in Aspen, Colorado. Little Ray, as she is known, comes in well below the podium but yet manages to conceive.

Little Ray trains as a ski instructor back in his native New England. Adam, her son, is raised in an unconventional family that avoids discussing their turbulent background. Years from now, Adam will travel to Aspen in search of solutions. Adam will encounter some spirits in the Hotel Jerome, the place of his conception, however, they won’t be his first or last encounters with them.

If you’ve never read a John Irving novel, you’ll be enthralled by the tragic and humorous storytelling, as well as the memorable characters they’re embodied by. If you’ve already read John Irving, you’ll rediscover the themes that helped him establish himself as a bard of alternative families and a pioneering voice on the issue of sexual liberation.

The author’s favorite clichés are present, but readers will also experience compelling turns in this expertly structured book. Irving, who has been hailed as “among the very best storytellers at work today,” “the American Balzac,” “a pop star of literature, beloved by all generations,” and “the voice of social justice and compassion in contemporary American literature,” among others, breaks new artistic ground with The Last Chairlift (The Globe and Mail). The Last Chairlift will bring readers back under John Irving’s spell.
