The Marriage Portrait PDF Book Summary

Marriage Portrait creates an interior world rich in detail, while vividly recapturing a particular era, in this case, the Italian Renaissance, a time filled with intrigue, pomp, rustling fabrics, glowing frescos, blood, lust, and ambition. There is no doubt that the duchess looks, sounds, and feels as if she is alive. O’Farrell creates an uncanny impression of Lucrezia’s very unusual situation.

The reader feels Lucrezia’s exhaustion and terror when she is abandoned in a strange place shortly after her marriage, her feeling of freedom and giddy excitement when she is married for the first time and her revulsion and fear at the ‘fury and contempt’ of her husband. This reader was brought to tears by the final twist, which was unexpected and so well-executed. Through it, O’Farrell shows fiction’s ability to offer counter-narratives to the dominant historical narrative, and to open up possibilities beyond our wildest imaginations

Through little threads of historical detail, O’Farrell weaves the story of a precocious girl sensitive to the contradictions of her station. There may be certain elements of history and a sense of what’s to come, but don’t be so sure. There is no way O’Farrell and Lucrezia, with their crystalline, righteous anger, can ever keep up with you. O’Farrell [is] one of the most exciting novelists alive.

Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, the third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place within the palazzo: she is free to observe the clandestine workings, marvel at its treasures, and dedicate herself to her own artistic expression. Nevertheless, when her older sister dies just before her wedding to the ruler of Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio, Lucrezia finds herself suddenly thrust into the spotlight: the duke asks for her hand in marriage, and her father accepts.

As she barely leaves girlhood behind, Lucrezia must now navigate an unfamiliar court whose customs are mysterious and where her presence is not welcome. She is perhaps most mystified by her new husband, Alfonso. What kind of man is he, the playful sophisticate who appeared to be before their wedding, the aesthete who enjoys artistry and music, or the ruthless politician who makes even his formidable sisters tremble?

In the midst of sitting in constricting finery for a painting intended to preserve her image for centuries to come, one thing becomes alarmingly apparent. The court views her as having only one duty: providing an heir to secure the Ferrarese dynasty’s future. Her future remains completely uncertain until then, despite her nobility and rank. Maggie O’Farrell transforms Renaissance Italy into a portrait of a resilient young woman facing the loss of her very life, with the same beauty and emotion with which she illuminated Shakespeare’s Hamnet.
