The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo PDF Book Summary

Evelyn Hugo’s Seven Husbands is more than just an escapism story. It is a story that sweeps its audience back to an era when show business glamour danced along with real-life intrigue, romantic entanglements, and perceptions of impropriety. Taylor Jenkins Reid excels at the art of creating memorable, fast-paced, and gripping performances that evoke themes of loyalty, betrayal, friendship, and love that rival any Hollywood blockbuster. The story leaves the reader wondering if they are merely role-playing with their loved ones or if they are being authentic with who they are.

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel about love, hate, and perception mesmerized me from the very first page. A captivating story about what you would do in the name of true love, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo may become my new go-to book to recommend to other book lovers who love books as much as I do.
This book is meant to be read as a historical romance, in which the reader learns about a fictional, famous, old Hollywood actress and all of her marriages over the course of her life.

Evelyn’s story begins when she loses her mother at a very young age, her body develops very rapidly, she notices others being observant of her developing body, and she marries a man to be able to leave the dead-end city she grew up in so that she can become something more. Throughout the book, Evelyn is unapologetic about her actions, and I found reading it to be one of the most empowering things I have ever read. There are so many more parts that she plays than the roles that are cast for her. Evelyn is a very fast learner.

She quickly learns how to play with every man she is forced to interact with, and she also learns what she can gain from every single one of them, as well. It is a story that is told from two different points of view and from two different timelines. The first one follows Monique Grant, who is a biracial (white and African-American) woman going through a fresh divorce and trying to make something of herself in the journalism field, as she is a biracial (white and African-American) woman. The day her editor tells her that Evelyn Hugo is insisting on her writing something for her, her life changes.

Evelyn Hugo demands only that she write something for her and only her. Evelyn is also recounting the events that led her to the point at which she had to tell Monique this story, as well as her different seven husbands over the course of her life while describing the events that lead her to tell Monique this story. Having lived a very full life, Evelyn is now in her late seventies and is finally ready to talk about the many experiences she has had throughout her life. Throughout the whole book, we are left guessing why she has chosen Monique for this job and not any other woman.

Throughout her life, Evelyn Hugo has gone from bombshell to sexpot, to Oscar winner, to civil rights activist, all while starting young at the age of fourteen and ending at the age of seventy-nine (when we first meet Evelyn). It was clear to Evelyn from an early age what she wanted in life-to get out of Hell’s Kitchen, escape the abuse of her father, and become the biggest star anyone could ever imagine. And she accomplished that!

The reasons for this are partly due to her talent, partially due to the fact that she knows her worth and is not afraid to get dirty in order to accomplish her goals, and partially due to the fact that no one is better at using the media and scandals to their own advantage. There is no doubt that Evelyn is a force to be reckoned with, but she is also a flawed and lonely person. This remarkable memoir is told through the perspective of Evelyn as she dictates her memoirs to Monique, taking the reader back to the early days of Hollywood and allowing them to witness Evelyn’s rise, and her stumbles, to and through stardom.

The book has a lot of depth for a story about a Hollywood starlet, and I don’t think I was expecting the level of depth it has, despite many reviews warning me that this story would be full of surprises.
In order to become Evelyn Hugo, Hollywood’s biggest star, Evelyn had to let go of who she was; erasing her identity in order to become what Hollywood wanted her to be in order to become what Hollywood wanted her to become.

There is no doubt that she knew and accepted that as she was being portrayed as the blonde bombshell the screen adored, but it was sad to watch her identity being stripped away so that she could be the blonde bombshell the screen adored. The things Evelyn avoided or changed, often denying the most real parts of herself in the process, really hit me in the feels toward the end of the book, and there were parts at the end of the book where I was holding back tears if that tells you anything about the book.

There is really no point in me saying more because the way that the story unfolds is so lovely with getting to know all 7 of Evelyn’s husbands in her life and the roles they play, but I must say that I enjoyed how the fake articles were inserted into the narrative to illustrate how Evelyn’s reality contrasted with what the public got to see, and what the press did with her.

There was something so empowering about watching Evelyn be so confident and confident of herself, so unafraid of telling other people what she wanted, and how she deserved it, so unafraid of letting people know what she valued, and how she felt-all because she knew what she was worth. After being widowed by her seventh husband, Evelyn Hugo has lived a secluded life and has been a recluse for years. She is one of the most famous actresses in the world. After finally being ready to share her entire story with the public and the media, she sends a letter to Monique Grant, a magazine reporter, telling her what the public and the media have always wanted to know.
