This is an excellent epistolary (story told in texts/e-mails) novella with a few phrases. The story is in turn pathetic, disturbing, horrifying, and totally revolting. The characters are so real you can feel their breath on your computer screens as they typed the messages and emails that make up the story.
There are definitely trigger warnings in this book: mental illness, dom/sub relationships, raw meat, and self-harm. The book consists of a conversation between two women in the form of a psychological thriller. It creeps on you slowly and then blows up in your face with an amazingly twisted ending. The series of emails and Instant Messenger conversations make for very interesting and absorbing reading.
In just 102 pages containing a few emails and instant messenger conversations, LaRocca reveals a story that begins with one human being helping another who is going through a difficult time and quickly turns into someone giving up their freedom, autonomy, and safety to someone else. Voluntarily at that! The dynamic between Agnes and Zoe ramps up to pure madness. From the very beginning, we know how Agnes’ story will end, but getting to the how and why is harrowing.
Eric Larocca went to extremes to make the point that evil lurks out there on the internet without discrimination, regardless of class, gender, or sexual orientation. When a relationship between two women online takes terrifying turns, it begins innocently enough, but soon swells into a whirlpool of sickness and depravity. You will squirm in your chair as you read this bizarre tale about love gone wrong, obsession turned to madness.
An abusive relationship developing as the mental health of a lonely young woman declines is heartbreaking. The warning signs in a relationship are subtle and easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for, at least till it’s too late. The body horror complements the psychological horror perfectly, further adding to the unsettling atmosphere. Even though this novella is only one hour long, you will feel dread for days after reading it.
