About the book

Dr. Turnell’s prison memoirs, aptly titled “An Unlikely Prisoner”, have been written with candour and humour. Descriptions of the harsh, brutal, and at many times terrifying conditions in which he found himself while a political prisoner in Myanmar for 650 days form the substrate of the book. There are no doubt similar prison memoirs by other ex-political prisoners over the last century. This one will take a unique place in the already rich literature of Myanmar/Burma. The book lays bare the brutality of the junta in Myanmar; it poignantly shines a light on the suffering of the 55 million citizens of Myanmar; and it gives some wonderful touching insights into the character and strength of one of the key players in Myanmar, namely the Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, respectfully referred to as Daw Suu throughout the book. Dr Turnell is clearly no poet, as the publication of poems to his wife reveals. He acknowledges this – but what does flow through the pages of these memoirs is not only the care and concern he felt for his fellow prisoners, but especially the deep love that he has for his wife, Dr Ha Vu, and she for him. Dr Ha Vu and Aung San Suu Kyi come through as towers of strength and are the heroines in this book.
