Aegon the Conqueror begins Fire and Blood, describing the Rise and Fall of the Targaryen Dynasty from Aegon the Conqueror to Aerys the Mad, tracing each generation of the Targaryens from Aegon to Aerys. As well as the Song of Fire and Ice books themselves, this book expands on the history found in The World of Ice and Fire.

Fire and Blood, on the other hand, emphasizes the Targaryen family after Westeros was conquered by Aegon the Conqueror. In spite of the fact that this one reads more like a story than an academic book, it still follows all the conventions of a history book, such as citing multiple and sometimes contradictory sources and giving several versions of events where the true story is supposedly unknown.

Real history sometimes appears to be a story without a plot, as instead of plot twists, the allegedly true nature of the events sometimes rears its ugly head and completely changes everything. It is not uncommon for people to die of a random plague without any other intervention to foil their plots, or that a popular princess to be unexpectedly taken away from the kingdom.

In both figurative and literal terms, Fire and Blood depict the (fictional) history of the Targaryen Dynasty (to the start of King Aegon III’s reign). Through Fire and Blood, we see the world of ASOIAF through the eyes of a person who reached into the ASOIAF universe and brought one of their textbooks to us. George RR Martin portrays history the way he likes it, including all the betrayal, brutality, struggles, emotions, love, and sex of human nature. The author of the book is attributed to Archmaester Gyldayn, who chronicles the experiences of the Targaryen generations through multiple first- and second-hand accounts.

The reader is encouraged to decide for themselves what actually transpired as Gyldayn often points out sources’ motivations, discusses rumors and songs, and discusses the possibility of certain people’s alleged actions, creating an ambiguity that makes the happenings feel alive. Despite the fact that the book is written from the perspective of someone who has not experienced the events, the reader is overwhelmed by the weight of the decisions Targaryen must make, the joys and despairs of Targaryen’s domestic life, and the terror and abhorrence of war.

George R.R. Martin has created an art form known as the Mystery Box that leaves all manner of clues and breadcrumbs, leading the reader on a journey of discovery. Although he employs the trope differently from most others, such as Chris Carter and JJ Abrams, it’s clear he does at least have answers to the mysteries he invokes. The book is full of riddles for all ages, but you’re not left unsatisfied, since the book often makes its own suggestions as to how things might have worked out.

A Song of Ice and Fire and the Game of Thrones media empire are both complemented beautifully by Fire and Blood. In any case, if you aren’t terribly interested in the world-building and history of the setting, you’re probably going to be disappointed. An excellent pseudo-history of events rather than a novel. This is a summary of the good parts, done in an entertaining and well-formatted manner. Additionally, it ruins many possible projects that may one day become shows.
