The Passenger PDF
As the first in a two-volume masterpiece, The Passenger is the best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Road. In The Passenger, a salvage diver is haunted by loss, afraid of the water, pursued by a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longs for death he cannot reconcile with his faith. You can find Stella Maris, the second installment of The Passenger series, on sale on December 6th, 2022. It’s three o’clock in the morning in Pass Christian, Mississippi when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and dives into the darkness from the Coast Guard tender.
His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair dangling, eyes void of speculation. The flight bag of the pilot, the black box of the plane, and the tenth passenger are all missing from the crash site. But how? It is Western who suffers in body and spirit from the effects of plans that can only harm him – by men with badges, by the ghost of his father, the inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima, and by his sister, the love of his life and the cause of his downfall.
An enthralling novel about science and morality, the legacy of sin, and human consciousness, The Passenger takes place in a variety of American South locations, from the rowdy bars of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast. McCarthy is the undisputed heir to Melville and Faulkner of American literature, and he is the subject of countless graduate-school theses as well as being a hard-nosed dispenser of what Saul Bellow called ‘life-giving and death-dealing sentences’. The humid, fevered, magniloquent, Bible-cadenced, comma-starved, word-drunk prose of what some fans call his masterwork, Suttree, is what fans perceive to be his masterwork.
There’s a lot here. It might make your head spin. All that adds up to a doomed and unsettling love story, a tragedy of the Platonic kind. Electric and thunderous. An astonishing pair of novels. Together, The Passenger and Stella Maris make for a breathtaking intellectual experience.
This is a beguiling, exceedingly strange novel by the acclaimed (and decidedly idiosyncratic) author of Blood Meridian (1982) and The Road (2006). He’s now more interested in darting quarks than exploding heads after working as a trustee at the Santa Fe Institute. It’s all vintage McCarthy, though less bloody than most of his writing. The book is full of trademark themes and techniques, such as conspiracy theories…shocking behavior…and beautiful linguistic flights. It was a pleasure to see this enigmatic, elegant, and extraordinary artist once again after a long absence.
