To Paradise PDF Book Summary

Across three different time periods (1893, 1993, 2093), Hanya Yanagihara’s novel To Paradise explores the relationship between men and women, lovers and friends, grandparents and grandchildren. In addition to dealing with relationships, family legacies, fame and fortune, and the fate of America, each of these characters face a number of difficult circumstances. When it comes to these characters (who often share the same name), one can fall in step rooting for them when they are either trying to defy their legacy or uphold it, whether they live in Manhattan mansions, tents in Hawaii, or dystopian apartment buildings.

There is a sense of David Mitchell in the novel, along with a sprinkling of Edith Wharton, and something entirely new. This novel examines the different ways countries and families can be, probing how families can be, resulting in another triumphant work of fiction by the author of A Little Life. If these adjectives did not adequately convey its exceptionality, To Paradise is also confounding, brilliant, intricate, beautiful, and horrific. It is divided into three parts, each of which is set a hundred years apart, including one part historical fiction (set in 1893), one part present-ish-day chronicle (1993), and a part futuristic sci-fi story (2093).

There is a dystopian future depicted in that last chapter, which must have been informed by, if not entirely drafted by, the pandemic, with ‘cooling suits’ required to go outside and ‘decontamination chambers’ to keep infection at bay. Those who consumed Yanagihara’s most recent work, A Little Life, will not be surprised that this book, like its predecessor, is more concerned with pain and suffering than joy and happiness. Despite all the heart-wrenching turns it takes, this book nevertheless retains a sense of hope for the possibility of love despite all its spectacular scenes and tantalizing connections.

While some sections of the book feel quite conventional on their own, when taken together with all of their extreme cliffhangers and unanswered questions-the stories seem to ask: what do we want from novels? Some of the most poignant feelings that literature can evoke are not resolved here, but they are certainly elicited nonetheless. It was an intimate, close-up portrait of four men battling loneliness, guilt, and love in Hanya Yanagihara’s critically-acclaimed “A Little Life”. “To Paradise,” her new novel, is a sprawling but intimate epic also centered on love, shame, and existential loneliness.

Aside from these shared themes (and their heft), the two novels have little in common other than Yanagihara’s masterful, strangely compelling writing and her knack for delving into the hearts of her characters, no matter how despicable or tender. In theory, the three books are connected by the same character names (David, Charles, Edward, etc.) and the same Washington Square Park house that appears in each of them at some point.

Yet there are deeper, ineffable ties, as well, such as the moral and political questions: What is freedom? What does it mean to be protected? Does the latter preclude the possibility of the former? Are gilded cages any less restrictive for being gilded? The novel “To Paradise” does not definitively answer these questions, but it offers ambivalence instead of moral absolutes, making it rich, emotional, and thought-provoking.

This novel by Hanya Yanagihara challenges love, history, and our most profound protective instincts with a sense of prophecy that feels prophetic, but is actually based on the oldest of human themes: ardor, shame, and the most primal of human feelings.  A merciful heart that burns for all creation narrates Charlie’s stories of the future. One of the rare books that tell us what it means to be an American is To Paradise, a work in its own right, a major work.
