This is a wonderful book in which you can learn about the Earth and yourself. The ways we dismiss others unlike us; the need we have for human touch; the strength of life determined to thrive. Through the author’s writing, the reader experience a kaleidoscope of feelings and thoughts as well as a wealth of information about the natural world and animals.
There are so many life lessons to be learned from this simple narrative. In the story, a little girl suffers a variety of life events, but she remains in control of what she chooses. As we watch her grow into a woman, she discovers life’s mysteries and may have caused one of her own. There are love, romance, abuse, abandonment, neglect, family, survival, and murder involved. A mystery, a love story, and a courtroom drama, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is primarily about self-reliance, survival, and how isolation affects human behavior.
It is a story of a region rich in history and diverse in its people. An incredible tale of courage and strength is Kya’s triumph over loneliness, abandonment, and prejudice. On top of everything else, it’s educational too. And finally, it’s also a mystery. In his description of the story, the author says it is primarily about self-reliance, survival, and the effects of isolation on humans. A social mammal has strong genetic tendencies to belong to tightly bonded groups of family and friends.” (P. 366) What do you mean by “genetic tendencies”? How much personal choice do humans have?
It is man’s non-automatic rational faculty that provides him with the means to survive. As he progresses from the stage of a newborn infant to adulthood, he also needs a lot of help from others, especially family members. It should not be surprising that children who are not provided with such assistance in childhood will experience stunted growth and may be unable to prepare for adulthood. Heroes might explore more fully the extent to which an individual can learn about life from books, and how those lessons might unfold as the individual attempts to apply those lessons to their life. In terms of Crawdads, Kya makes a valiant and largely successful attempt, which makes it excellent in my opinion.
Kya lives with her poverty-stricken family in the marshes of North Carolina. As a result of her abusive father, her siblings eventually leave, and, eventually, so does her mother as well. Her father stays for a while and seems better, even kind. In the end, he falls back into his old habits again and leaves as well. Despite being bullied, Kya never returns to school after a day at school. She makes it all on her own and digs mussels for sale at the local store to earn money. The marsh is a favorite haunt for Tate, a boy a few years older than Kya.
They become friends and he teaches her to read. Through reading, she discovers and learns everything there is to know about marshlands and their nature. Everything she finds in her marsh area is illustrated and collected as samples. After attending college, Tate works in a marsh as a biologist. Kya becomes a published author several times over when he submits her illustrations and notes to a publisher. The wealth she owns allows her to add comfort to her house and live a comfortable life. Although she lives simply, she has access to electricity and running water, which she has never experienced before.
Upon going away to college, Tate realized that Kya would have a hard time adjusting to his new life. So, he doesn’t visit her for years. During his absence, Kya moved in with Chase, a popular and local man. All the while, he dates other women, tricking them into believing he’s going to marry her. After reading an article about his engagement in the local newspaper, Kya decides to propose to him. She is attacked later, tried to be raped, and beaten. She fights back and escapes.
The body of the man is found in the marsh later, looking as if he fell from the fire tower. Police are forced to investigate his murder since he was a local celebrity. Kya is arrested and faced a murder trial. I’m hoping Kya killed Chase after he attacked her, but I also don’t want her to be found guilty the whole time I read the part. Throughout the book, I couldn’t put it down because the suspense builds to an intensity that had me hooked!
